## What is Legible OCR
Legible OCR is a document OCR app for Apple silicon Macs, for anyone who needs the text of a PDF or an image without sending it to a cloud service: researchers with papers, people with scanned books and forms, developers who want a coding agent to read their documents. It runs Unlimited-OCR, an open vision model published by mlx-community on Hugging Face, on the Mac's GPU through MLX, and keeps the page's structure: headings, paragraphs, tables as Markdown, equations as LaTeX, and figures cropped out as images. It reads Latin-script text and Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Output is Markdown, plain text, or a searchable PDF (the original with an invisible text layer). It has a full-text search over every page ever read, and an optional local MCP server so Claude Code or Codex can read the library. Requires Apple silicon and macOS 26; the model (2.5 to 6.7 GB, 3.93 GB default) downloads once from Hugging Face.

## How it differs
- vs Live Text and Preview: Live Text gives lines of words; Legible gives the page's layout as Markdown, with tables, equations and figures, and a searchable PDF export.
- vs cloud OCR services (Google Document AI, Adobe Acrobat's OCR, ChatGPT uploads): those upload the pages; Legible runs the model on the Mac and uploads nothing.
- vs command-line OCR (Tesseract, ocrmypdf): Legible is a sandboxed Mac App Store app with a window, a library, search and figure crops; no installation of tools or models by hand.

## Pricing
Free download; the free version reads five pages of any document. A free 7-day Trial reads every page for seven days. The Full Version is a one-time in-app purchase (US$29.99; shown by the App Store in local currency) with no subscription and no account, restorable on any Mac signed in with the same Apple Account. Refunds are handled by Apple.
